The collection contains a manuscript poem "From the Spanish." Correspondence is chiefly with the Rev. Henry Hart Milman, English poet and historian, and Dean of St. Pauls. The two generally exchange and discuss books. Other topics include the U.S. lecture tour of Charles Lyell, schools and education in Massachusetts, U.S. politics, slavery, and the Compromise of 1850, the death of William H. Prescott and Ticknor's proposed biography of the historian, the burial of Macaulay in Westminster Abbey, English copyright laws, the introduction of friends, and Sir Edmund Head. Other correspondence includes letters of introduction and thanks, and friendly notes. He also regrets that he cannot attend a meeting in memory of James Fenimore Cooper, and discusses finances of the Boston public library.
